Most of the normal files are created, but the above fails and package.json lacks dependencies as an example.

I tried
The only thing I've changed recently is that I upgraded the NPM version
sudo npx create-next-appand all of a sudden it works, this is not something I've had too do before, does anyone know how to sort that and why this might have happend?The only thing I've changed recently is that I upgraded the NPM version

Try to specify your app name at the last or add dot (.)
npx create-next-app@latest .
